‘Roll with the chaos’: Actor on playing Andy Griffiths

For two days only in the July school holidays, the best crazy, annoying silly stories from the JUST series will come to life on stage at Illawarra Performing Arts Centre in Wollongong.

JUST - Live on Stage is adapted by Robin Goldsworthy from the bestselling books, written by Andy Griffiths and illustrated by Terry Denton.

Philip Lynch is the lucky guy who gets to play Andy.

"I'm an actor who has now been based in Sydney for a couple years since graduating from NIDA," he told the Flame this week. "I originally grew up in Perth, however!"

Thanks to Philip for taking the time to tell us more about the show, which promises to deliver "invisibility pills and mudmen, vomiting dogs and death-defying balloon rides". Hang onto your winter hats, the show's promoters warn: "It won’t be for the faint-farted… we meant faint-hearted!"

How did you discover the Just series?

I was definitely a reader of Andy Griffiths' work from a young age, remembering my own worn-out copies of Just Stupid and Annoying especially, as well as Bumageddon. Mum bought the books and I read them for the most part, but it was also just a field looking at the illustrations. In fact, I think it was those books that taught me what an "illustrator" was.

What's the trick to playing Andy Griffiths?

Excellent question. With such a mercurial essence, how do you pin him down? I think it's in the idea of taking things to the Nth degree that makes Andy who he is.

The character is a boy of 12 with just the wildest sense of imagination, and Mr Griffiths’ books definitely scream the same wild nature that's captured in the show. So sometimes, you just gotta roll with the chaos.

Biggest challenge in this production?

Showing messy stuff on stage. Mud. Dog vomit. Pee. Standard stuff, really.

What do kids love most about your show?

I think they'll love the chance to see some grubby kids mess about for a day. They’ll get to see some very fun characters, who span the width of feeling unsure in how to grow up. They also get to see that it can sometimes lead to very interesting discoveries and triumphs, while sometimes getting the chance to play along with us!

Why should parents relax and embrace everything 'tricking, annoying, stupid, crazy, disgusting, shocking, doomed'?

I think the best thing you can give a kid is the right to their own imagination. Curiosity is a constant current, one that can sometimes be easily interrupted.

Though it can be scary to let kids run ragged, what a gift you give them when they can come back with dirt on their face and stories to share.

JUST - Live on Stage will be at IPAC in Wollongong on Friday, 14 July 10am & 12.30pm and Saturday, 15 July 10am (relaxed performance) & 12.30pm. for ages 7+. It's for ages 7+. Tickets: $29. Book here.

Not old enough for Just yet? The chuckles keep coming for little ones in Hiccup on Wednesday, July 19.
