What's On at the Writers Centre in October

There’s something for all ages at the South Coast Writers Centre in October!

On Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th, join us for our School Holiday Program. From 10 to 11am, local author and journal maker Pat Simmons leads kids aged 7 to 10 in a Create Your Own Journal workshop, using a paper bag, stickers, papers, and other great ephemera. All materials supplied.

Older kids can join Young Writers Program mentor Rhys Lorenc in the two-hour writing workshop Monsters: Writing the Inhuman. You’ll learn not only what makes a monster a monster, but how to make them compelling, memorable, and unique. Together, you will write creatures of dream and nightmare into being. If you’re a fan of horror, folklore, or things that go bump in the night, this is the workshop for you! For ages 10 to 13 on Tuesday 7th, and ages 14 to 18 on Wednesday 8th, 12 to 2pm.

Plus, don’t miss our kids’ book sale both days, happening at Coledale Community Hall.

It’s not just kids who can learn something new at the SCWC this month. From Sunday 19th October, join local author and leader of the SCWC members walking group Julie Keys in the 5-week workshop course Writing for Over 50s.

Did you know Elizabeth Jolley, Kit de Waal, Raymond Chandler, Annie Proulx, Frank McCourt, and Vicki Laveau-Harvie all published their first novel when they were over 50? It’s never too late to flex your imagination and writing muscles! Very limited spots remaining in this course, so don’t miss out!

And if you love the romance genre, then you’ll love our half-day, Writing Romance workshop with award-winning, USA Today bestselling author Alyssa J. Montgomery on Saturday, 18th October. Learn how to create compelling characters, a strong premise and plot line, dazzling dialogue, sizzling chemistry, and more! 10am to 2:30pm, with a catered lunch included.

Plus, don’t forget that early bird tickets are on sale for True Story in November! Join us in a celebration of some of the best creative non-fiction writing in Australia today.

Tickets to all upcoming workshops and events at the SCWC can be booked via our website: southcoastwriters.org/upcomingevents
