Coming up in June and July are a series of fantastic writing workshops for writers of all ages.
On Sunday, 22 June, Bernadette Foley returns with her popular Editing and Publishing Masterclass.
This intensive workshop with esteemed publisher and editor Bernadette Foley will help you to understand what publishers are looking for in a new book pitch. It will teach you how to identify the audience for your book, and how to refine your topic or concept. Past workshops with Bernadette have sold out with rave reviews, and tickets for this year’s are going fast. Coledale Community Hall, 22 June, 10am-2:30pm.
Then, as part of the South Coast Readers & Writers Festival, two leading festival authors present two-hour intensive workshops on Friday, 4 July at Coledale Hall.
Ryan Butta, author of The Bravest Scout at Gallipoli, will present Writing Historical Non-Fiction: From Research to Structure, from 12 noon to 2pm. Whether you're starting out or refining a historical non-fiction manuscript, Ryan offers guidance grounded in experience, a journalist’s curiosity, and a storyteller’s eye.

Then, bestselling author and mainstay of the fantasy genre Isobelle Carmody presents Compelling Fantasy Worlds, 3-5pm. Participants in this workshop will undertake practical steps that draw on their own lives and experiences to build both compelling settings and characters shaped by an exploration of their own questions and concerns in the real world. This approach enables the creation of genuinely original and compelling fantasy, rather than being fantasy that is little more than a re-arrangement of tired fantasy tropes.
Only 15 places available in each workshop and places are selling fast.
And finally, for younger readers and writers, award-winning children’s author A.L. Tait presents How to Write (and Solve) a Mystery, from 10-11am on Saturday, 5 July in Thirroul Library. This is a free session, registrations essential, where participants will have the opportunity to map their own mystery with the author of Danger Road and Willow Bright’s Secret Plot. Recommended for ages 9 to 12.
