Spring into school holidays with these 21 activities

This Spring school holidays are the perfect chance to embark on exciting adventures and create lasting memories with and for your little ones. Explore the Illawarra region to discover natural wonders, cultural delights and family-friendly activities.

Here are our top recommendations for the kids these holidays.

Indoor School Holiday Activities

  1. Treetop Arts – Enjoy Treetop Arts' spring holiday workshops, filled with crafts, ninja obstacle courses, aerials and circus fun! With full or half-day options, you can also opt in for early and late drop-offs, with movies and snacks included. 
  2. Possum Magic – In the first week of school holidays, Monkey Baa’s award-winning creative team bring Mem Fox's whimsical world of the book to the stage.
  3. UOW Science Space – Throughout the school holidays kids can opt in for the astronaut academy, Lego moon mission or be game designers, depending on days and interests.
  4. Early Start Discovery Space – These free programs are run by qualified educators daily in the Discovery Space across the school holidays. You can take part in creating paper sculptures, interactive stories, drumming circles, dancing, STEAM and doodle and draw sessions. 
  5. Wollongong Art Gallery – The spring workshops and activities are aimed at children aged 5 to 14. These artist-run activities include Shading Patterns, Paper Monsters, Collage Cupcakes, Family Portraits, Hanging Sculptures and Lantern Decorating workshops. Book early to secure your spot.
  6. Wollongong City Libraries – Across the Illawarra, city libraries are hosting a variety of activities. At Thirroul Library, kids can take part in Paint ‘n’ Snack, Rainbow Fish and Rainbow Serpent activities. Check out your local library to see what's on when. 
  7. Robo Camps – Project Bucephalus Robotics is running Robo camps in Shoalhaven and Wollongong across the school holidays, with days focusing on beginner training and more complex creations. 
  8. Hideaway Lane – The Kids in the Kitchen cooking classes will encourage kids to use the freshest, healthiest ingredients, cooking from scratch to prepare exciting, tasty dishes.
  9. Merrigong Creativity Camp – Runs from September 25 to 29, focusing on interactive theatre, performance and design workshops.
  10. Blackduck Ceramics – Join the team for 2x two-hour workshops, hand-building with clay then glazing to create a mug or bowl. 
  11. Go Create Art Studio – There'll be six Art & Craft workshops, held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays in the school holidays. Every day a different teacher will share their particular skill and passion for their craft. Read more about the studio in our Q&A with founder Imogen Ross.

Outdoor School Holiday Activities

  1. Green Connect – On Thursday, September 28 and October 5, join the crew at Green Connect farm on a mini-tour adventure, plus feed the pigs, goats, sheep and alpacas, and enjoy free play. 
  2. Madden Falls – As the weather heats up, try the kid-friendly walk to Madden Falls and enjoy a refreshing swim. More info in Kasey's review here
  3. Stanwell Park – Spot the five new dinosaur species added to the Stanwell Park trail, including Kritosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Shamosaurus, Argentinosaurus and Sinornithosaurus. Find out more about the path here
  4. Buena Vista Farm – Offering extra Goat Therapy Farm Tours this school holiday. Start at the kitchen, meet and cuddle the goats along with the rest of the farm animals, followed by a visit (and taste) of the farm cheese and kefir. 
  5. Jamberoo Recreation Park – Just in time for school holidays, the park will open with its newest addition, The Stinger!
  6. Bald Hill – Take a stroll up the new sandstone stairway from Stanwell Park to Bald Hill heaven. Enjoy the views and watch the hangliders too. 
  7. Bundanon – Offering free art-marking program for young people aged 12-18 that includes artmaking, ecology walks and visits to the Art Museum. The activity is spaced across two days from September 25 to 26
  8. Motiv8sports Big Battle School Holiday Camp – In either Shellharbour or Wollongong in the first week of holidays, your little one can join Bravehearts or the Goliaths for 2 days and 9 battles against each other in 16 sports challenges including Super Soccer, Vortex Gridiron, Sector-8, Flagball, Big Dog Cricket, Ultimate League, Ruckus, Street Hockey, Ballers, The Grid, Raiders & Courage Under Fire.
  9. Illawarra Rockpools – Let our resident nature writer, Amanda De George of Backyard Zoology, guide you through the best of the Illawarra's rockpools. From weird creatures to sea hares to anemones, she has you covered. 
  10. Illawarra beaches – Thanks for Caitlin Sloan's handy "Beach of the Week" guides, you can explore all of the Illawarra beaches, from Stanwell Park to Windang. Whether you want to bring your furry friend, know the best surf breaks or be across dangerous rips, Caitlin has documented it all – straight from the locals mouths.
