Illawarra Ramblers invite bush walkers to take a hike on National Tree Day

Following on from the Illawarra Flame's July article on famed local tree identity Leon Fuller, his life and books, on National Tree Day the Illawarra Ramblers are putting on a walk with lots of trees.

Although the main ambition of National Tree Day is to plant more trees, on Sunday, July 27 we will simply be out among the trees.

Our walk will take in part of the Wodi Wodi track, which was created/enhanced as a bicentennial project. There is a lot of folklore around the track ascending Mt Mitchell. The commonly used expression “bullock track “comes to mind. Near the top of the ascent there is a very substantial overhanging rock ledge that would have over countless years provided home or shelter. We’ll pause for a water stop before taking in the views north and south from the top.

The pipeline and pumping station remnants from the hilltop reservoir supplying water to the Coalcliff Cokeworks are still in place. At one time Stanwell Park’s water was supplied from here. The surrounding canopy is very different. As we head past the Tops Conference Centre, there is another vegetation change before we view the viaduct and the two waterfalls which form Stanwell Creek. Getting back to Stanwell Park is a bit knee jarring, just one of the reasons this walk is memorable.

We are planning to take a small number of moderately experienced bushwalker guests on this walk. Fitness to cope with an uphill climb involving 250+ steps is a prerequisite.
