April is always my favourite month with clear blue skies and gentle autumn heat. It is also the month the Royal Easter Show is held in the Home, Garden and Lifestyle Pavilion at Homebush. This is where the country brings its very best to show to the city.
We know it isn’t all tea and scones for the CWA women, but when it’s showtime, the Royal Easter Show Devonshire Teas are a major fund-raising event which helps to support the NSW Disaster Relief Fund. This year was the 75th anniversary of serving scones at the Royal Easter Show.
The CWA Tea Rooms are a long-standing tradition at the show and a must do for many patrons. The tea rooms are a very popular focal point for friends and family to meet up over a scone and a cup of tea or coffee before planning which pavilion to visit next.
It all comes together with major sponsors donating the scone mix, cream, coffee and hot chocolate and a team of volunteers cooking superb, steaming hot scones to be served with jam and double cream. Even the food critics were impressed.
CWA members, family and friends can volunteer in varied roles from cooking or serving delicious scones as well as selling homemade cakes and jams. It is reported that 4,000 scones were served daily. What a buzz! Many volunteers develop lasting friendships and connections, and go on to visit rural communities to experience the country way of life. Not to mention, the free show entry which compliments a 4.5-hour shift of voluntary work.
Don’t forget we are at the CWA Hall, 15 The Drive Stanwell Park, at 10am on the first Tuesday of the month and always welcome new visitors.
