Illawarra model train enthusiasts have just weeks to find a new home after being given an eviction notice from their Unanderra clubhouse.

Formed in 1961, the Illawarra Model Railway Association has a proud history, but the desperate need for more housing in the region is forcing them to find a new clubhouse for the second time in recent years.

Based at Kanahooka for many years, the club was forced out of that building during the pandemic to make way for a housing project.

There’s now a sense of déjà vu for club members who are again facing eviction – this time from the former scout hall building they occupy.

Arlo says his club has just weeks to find a new home.

Arlo Steffen, aged 15, from Farmborough Heights, is one of the youngest club members. “We’ve been told we have to move out at the end of this month due to redevelopment plans for the site,” he said.

Arlo laments their earlier forced relocation from Kanahooka. “We were evicted from that place too and it still remains empty; it’s just the same today as when we left.”

The enthusiastic members of the Illawarra Model Railway Association meet every Friday and Monday, but they know the clock is ticking.

“We’re looking for a new home and we’re struggling to find somewhere that meets our needs and criteria for a clubhouse, with a suitable layout, and that’s safe and secure,” Arlo said.

For the TIGS student, who is also a keen member of the Illawarra Live Steamers, he says the prospect of the model train association being forcibly closed down would be devastating.

“It’s really upsetting me personally; it is deeper for me. I love the social aspect – getting to meet people who share my interests. When I hear the bad news about what’s happening, it makes me feel sad.”

Cr Anthony is offering his support, catching up with Arlo at Monday’s Live Steamers members’ day.

Ward two independent councillor Andrew Anthony has taken on the search for a new base, joining with the members in recent weeks to assess their needs.

“I’m hoping either the council or myself can help them find another building,” Cr Anthony said.

“The last few weeks when I’ve gone along I’ve noticed a very diverse group of people there. Older men, but also younger people. It provides a great opportunity for people to share in a common interest in trains.”

Arlo is hoping this story might help uncover the possibility of a new clubhouse building, so he can continue to enjoy the passion for trains he’s had “since I was a kid.

“Going to train club keeps me excited – it keeps me looking forward to life. It’s about enjoying the little things.”
