How did beach-goers guard against the sun in the 19th century?

Sun protection was important, however, until 1902 Wollongong residents also had to comply with regulations which forbad men and women swimming at the same time. By then a small band of Wollongong enthusiasts had begun defying regulations, resulting in the restrictions being removed.

However, it was not until 1928, with the opening of the Continental Baths, that a mixed bathing pool was available in the city. The baths were named after the practice of French resorts where mixed sex or continental bathing was permitted.
The Local Studies Section of the library has added over 51,000 images to our Illawarra Images Collection. However, we are always on the look-out for something new. We would love to hear from you if you have something to share.
