Local artists, Alena Kennedy and Friederike Krishnabhakdi-Vasilakis, are on a mission.

“We believe that everyone has an innate capacity for creativity—it's a fundamental aspect of being human.”

However, in our modern society many of us have lost touch with this natural ability, stifled by societal expectations and educational systems that prioritise analytical thinking over creative expression.

Their arts project, ArtWays, now running in its second year seeks to reignite that spark of creativity within people who believe they are “not creative”. But being creative is not just about creating art—it's about discovering oneself in the process and develop an openness to problem-solving.

Participants often report a profound shift in their self-perception, mood, and overall well-being. Alena and Friederike have run workshops with frontline healthcare workers, such as doctors, nurses, patients, children and social work sector, and developed successful methods anyone can employ to develop a creative practice that slows the busy mind.

“Through our workshops and retreats, we aim to reconnect people with their playful, inquisitive minds—free from self-judgment and inhibition. By immersing ourselves in the art-making process, we tap into mindfulness and receptiveness, fostering a deep sense of connection with ourselves and the world around us."

ArtWays’ upcoming retreat, Art Journaling: Brushstrokes of Self-Discovery, Saturday 30 March 2024, 9.30-4pm at Hillside Studio, Dombarton (near Dapto) offers a unique opportunity to explore this transformative journey.

Led by experienced facilitators, participants will learn the basics of art journaling and engage in guided exercises designed to unlock their inner creativity. From painting and drawing to collage and mixed media, there's something for everyone to explore. Through the pages of their art journals, which will be provided, participants find a deeper connection to their innermost thoughts and emotions, paving the way for greater inner balance, resilience, and joy.

So, whether you're a seasoned artist or a complete beginner, you are invited to join Friederike and Alena on this journey of self-discovery. Reserve your spot today and take the first step towards unlocking your creative potential. Together, let's embrace the art of living fully.

Contact Alena and Friederike via email: artways22@gmail.com for more info on the workshop and the ArtWays 2024 Program, or visit Instagram @artways_22.
