SLS Illawarra clubs – 17 in total from Helensburgh Stanwell Park in the north to Windang in the south – will be opening their clubs for the public to come along and meet our volunteer lifesavers.

This will be on Saturday 14 September from 10am to 1pm – so while you are out voting at the local Council elections, pop in and say hello and find out more about our clubs. The local surf clubs are – Helensburgh Stanwell Park, Coalcliff, Scarborough-Wombarra, Coledale, +-Austinmer, Thirroul, Sandon Point, Bulli, Woonona, Bellambi, Corrimal, Towradgi, Fairy Meadow, North Wollongong, Wollongong City, Port Kembla and Windang.

All our clubs are looking for new members to join – clubs cater for 5-13 year olds within their Junior Activities (Nippers) program where they will learn surf skills and acquire surf education and the nippers have opportunity to compete at surf carnivals.

Youth Members from 13-18 years old can patrol our beaches after competing surf education programs and adults are very welcome to volunteer in many varied roles including from patrolling, committee, BBQ, managing nipper groups.

Many people think that surf life saving is all about being in the water, but that’s not the case. There are plenty of roles that don’t require you to get your feet wet. Volunteer numbers have been declining over the past few years and some of our clubs are very low on membership numbers and it is getting difficult for them to provide the necessary coverage required of them to patrol our beaches and keep them safe.

The Open Day gives the members of the public an opportunity to come along and speak to surf club members about all the volunteering opportunities available to them. Come and discover a new way to stay active and connected. There are roles for everyone and the clubs will support you with training.

Your experience matters and would be appreciated – you can share your skills and wisdom. Join a supportive, like-minded community and find your place.

Surf Club will allow you to stay engaged, embrace new challenges and opportunities.

Your local club is your club – our community is diverse, with members from all walks of life and of all ages. By joining a club, you will be part of a team that values inclusivity and the unique contributions of each member. You will find peers who share your values and interests, and together, you will create a supportive network that enriches your life and the lives of those around you.
