Exclusive tour to honour aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave
On Saturday at HARS Aviation Museum, a special tour will take in the pioneering aviation work of Lawrence Hargrave
The pioneering aviation work and research which Lawrence Hargrave undertook at Stanwell Park and exploration of artefacts of early Australian aviation heritage will be in focus at a special tour held on Saturday, 14 February.
Starting at 10am, the exclusive guided tour will be led by three senior members of the Lawrence Hargrave Society (LHS) and the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS).
Pre-booking is essential to attend the morning tour and presentations at the HARS Aviation Museum. This will include a catered morning tea, a guided tour of the Lawrence Hargrave Centre and heritage archives followed by admission to HARS February Tarmac Days operational activities.
The Lawrence Hargrave Society's patron, Professor Michael Hough, said the tour would outline the pioneering work that Hargrave carried out at his Hillcrest House in Stanwell Park, his kite experiments at Stanwell Park Beach and at his Sydney residence.

Also involved in the tours will be the president of LHS, Rob Deacon, and LHS committee member Richard Webb.
This is an exclusive tour, is restricted to a maximum of 20 participants with three tour guides provided, and is offered only through pre-booking using a credit card at the HARS website (adult $65, concession $55 and children aged 12-15 $35).
“Participants will be able to inspect the full-size flying replica of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s Fokker tri-motor aircraft 'Southern Cross' and a flying de Havilland Tiger Moth trainer which was built at Bankstown,” Prof Hough said.
“In addition, we will access the restricted HARS heritage archives which include the de Havilland blueprints from which aircraft such as the Tiger Moth were built in Australia.”
The tour will take in the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame area in which Hargrave was the first inductee.
The tour will start at 10am with morning tea, and it will end at about 12.30pm. As it is also the Monthly HARS Tarmac Day with scheduled flying, tour participants can then stay on to enjoy that special day’s program of events.
