A food co-op, short for food cooperative, are grassroots initiatives that bring people closer to their food sources, promote sustainability, and foster a sense of community spirit. If you're looking to connect with like-minded individuals and access fresh, locally sourced produce, joining a food co-op might be just the thing for you.

So, what is a Food Co-op?

A food co-op is a community-driven organisation where members work together to provide access to affordable, high-quality food. These co-ops typically source their products directly from local farmers, producers, and distributors. By pooling resources and sharing responsibilities, members can enjoy a wide range of fresh produce, pantry staples, and specialty items while supporting growers and reducing their environmental footprint.

How can I find a local co-op?

In Wollongong, we have access to only a few food co-ops with the unfortunate closure of Healthy Cities Illawarra’s online market. Here are a two co-ops worth exploring:

  • Flame Tree Co-op, Thirroul – A member-owned, not-for-profit co-operative with a focus on sustainable, local and ethical food. Membership of Flame Tree is $55 annually (with reduced rate of $35 for concession card holders). You become a part of the co-op and receive a 10% discount on the retail price of all products. To become a member, chat to the helpful team in-store.
  • Box Divvy, all over – A social enterprise business that supports local farmers and wholesalers directly. You simply join a local “Hub” and shop the “market" via the app. You pay for what you purchase each week, with an admin fee that goes towards your “hubster”. I joined my local last year and haven’t looked back. To find your local hub, visit the website.
