On Saturday, 10 October, local author Pamela Cook leads a practical 3-hour workshop on the Pathways to Publication. Unpack both traditional and self-publishing models, and explore how to move your manuscript or writing project forward.

Whether you’re working on your first manuscript, looking for a home for your short fiction or poetry, or considering taking the publishing process into your own hands, this workshop will help you understand your options and make informed decisions about your pathway to publication.

Take a podcasting masterclass

Acclaimed podcast producer, host and critic Siobhán McHugh leads an unmissable half-day masterclass on Narrative Podcasts: The Invisible Art of Storytelling on Sunday, 1 November.

Distilling a complex narrative into must-listen serialised audio storytelling requires an understanding of the audio medium as well as conventional elements of storytelling such as rounded characters, strong writing, engaging plot and twists. In this workshop, learn how to write for voice, not print; be an engaging host that listeners relate to; demo basic audio editing, and more.

Young writers program returns

The SCWC Young Writers Program is back for term 4.

These after-school creative writing workshops are run by experienced mentors on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for ages 10 to 18, in Coledale Hall, Wollongong Library, Shellharbour City Library and the University of Wollongong.

The program aims to be both a class and community, where young writers can develop their craft and create work they are proud of in a relaxed, inclusive, and supportive space. Enrolments can fill up quickly, so book early to secure your spot. Trial sessions are available for all age groups.

Final films up for discussion

Film Club wraps up for another year at the SCWC with two fantastic movies to finish on: Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning directorial debut Get Out, screening on 7 November, and the Japanese comedy Tampopo, a film once described as the world’s first “ramen Western”, showing on 5 December. Tickets are available online or at the door, with discounts for SCWC and Screen Illawarra members.

The SCWC Film Club runs on the first Saturday of every month (except January), 7:30pm at Coledale Hall. Each movie is hand-picked by local film expert Graham Thorburn, who introduces the film before each screening and leads a discussion afterwards. Browse the entire back catalogue and read Graham’s previous introductions on the SCWC website.

Visit the SCWC website to book for all upcoming events, workshops and writing courses.
