Wollongong's University of the Third Age (U3A) is a friendly group of retired and semi-retired people who meet every week at the Salvation Army Hall in Burelli Steet, Wollongong. We have no religious connections but just gather to enjoy talks on various topics, as well as numerous activities.

Interesting talks take place on Monday and Thursday mornings.

Last Thursday, the U3A Film Group enjoyed a talk by Aileen Harland titled ‘The Universe Unveiled: Movies Dealing with other Worlds and Creatures’.

Aileen’s talk covered how previous films have dealt with space, for example, 2001: a Space Odyssey, but she also wanted to focus on how films could deal with space now, given recent developments in that field.  Her goal was to enlighten us about how technology is reflected in films about space or not, as shown by Gravity. Can AI influence the material you will choose in films in future?

Intrigued? The U3A Film Group meets at the same venue on Thursday afternoons from 1pm until about 3.30pm. Members watch a variety of films, for instance, Picnic at Hanging Rock and Good night, and Good Luck starring George Clooney, who also directed the film. Afterwards, members discuss the film.

If you are interested in our U3A, please contact Mick at wollongong.president@u3anet.org.au or phone him on 0401 006 825. There are also current newsletters available at our venue – come and try us out!
