The Illawarra and surrounds have a long history of dairy farming, stretching back to the mid-1880s. The lush, green rolling hills that are conducive to dairy cattle attracted small-scale family farms that established to the west and south of Wollongong.

Researchers from the University of Wollongong have been studying the family dairy farm culture of the Illawarra, and there are some remaining. With their help, I look into the history of local dairy farming and list some of the small-scale dairy farmers that still exist today to the west and south of Wollongong. You can also find out where to buy their delicious dairy products.

We are lucky to have the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Helensburgh, an important place for our Hindu community locally and further afield. I visit with friends, and we sample some of the delicious food from the canteen. There is an important event on their calendar in the coming weeks, so what a great opportunity to experience Hindu culture and religious festivities in our own backyard.

Enjoy,
