This week I've uncovered more great local success stories on our beaches.
On February 7, Surf Life Saving Australia launched the Pride Board – an initiative created by a group of lifesavers on a rainy afternoon patrol at Bellambi Beach nearly two years ago. Now, more than 130 boards have been sent to surf clubs across the country and one to the United Kingdom, thanks to the efforts of the Bellambi team and Sutherland board manufacturer Infront Surfcraft. I spoke to Matt Theris, deputy president of Bellambi SLSC, about his mammoth role in bringing these boards to life, and Mark Simpson, owner of Infront Surfcraft, who jumped at the opportunity to make them.
I also spoke to Bulli SLSC president Jamie Caldwell about last week's Australian Surf Rowers League (ASRL) Open, the largest stand-alone surf boat racing event in Australia, held at Bulli Beach from Thursday, February 9 to Sunday, February 12. From Thursday's wild weather flooding the clubhouse and forcing the cancellation of the Masters division events to the Bulli Gold Men's Open crew winning gold at their home beach, the four-day event was as spectacular as it was dramatic.
This week's Beach of the Week is Bellambi (now home of the Pride Board), with Bellambi SLSC's Club Director of Lifesaving, Rob Gorkin, sharing what you need to know before you go.
Catch you later,
Caitlin Sloan
