Home-grown talent behind new 'Milkwood Permaculture Living Handbook'

The third Foodtalks event from Food Fairness Illawarra was held recently at Saltbush Corner in Bulli, the home of Saltbush Projects’ Suzy Pickles and Adam Russell. The purpose of the evening was to launch a book written by an ex-Illawarra local.

The Milkwood Permaculture Living Handbook is written by Kirsten Bradley. Kirsten grew up in Kiama and moved to the city to “make art and trouble”, where she met her now partner in life and work, Nick. Together they built a life around permaculture, calling their burgeoning venture Milkwood. They now live the permaculture life in lutruwita/Tasmania, sharing and teaching permaculture design.

The book is a collection of principles and habits “for hope in a changing world” to cultivate meaningful connection and purpose. It is simply written and beautifully illustrated by another Illawarra expat Brenna Quinlan. Brenna grew up in Corrimal and is a permaculture educator and illustrator now based in Western Australia.

The full house (well, front yard) was treated to soup by Suzy and spinach triangles by prominent local baker Emma Huber (Millers Bakehouse). Also on hand were cocktails made from foraged and native ingredients courtesy of Trolley’d mobile bar.

Foodtalks Illawarra is an informal group of growers, producers, food retailers, cooks and advocates passionate about local food in the Illawarra.
