Warilla Barrack Point Surf Life Saving Club teammates Kobe Sims, Maddix Burke and Max Miller have won gold in the U13 & U14 Male Board Relay at the 2023 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at Scarborough Beach in Perth.

More than 1000 young life savers put their skills to the test on March 25 and 26 for the opening two days of the competition, affectionately known as the Aussies.

Among the contenders were a number of the Illawarra’s most talented surf sport athletes vying for glory across the surf race, board race, beach flags, beach sprint, ocean swim and relay events.

Warilla Barrack Point SLSC's victorious U13 and U14 Male Board Relay team beat out 31 other teams to win the race.

“It means a lot,” Kobe said of the victory in a post-race interview.

“[It means] everything, because we’ve been training basically just for this, so to a win a gold medal for it is really good,” Maddix said.

Earlier in the day, the boys – alongside fellow Warilla Barrack Point teammate Mack Elliott – took 2nd place in the U13 & U14 Male Surf Teams Final.

Kobe, Maddix and Max said that competing as not only teammates, but as friends, made their win extra-special.

“All the work that we put in together just for it all to come together is really good,” Max said.

Warilla Barrack Point SLSC's Imogen Moore won bronze in the U13 Female Beach Flags event, Alani Sims took 5th place in the U13 Female 2km Beach Run, and Cooper Walsh, Lucas Krstevski and Storm Balmain placed in third in the U14 & U15 Male Board Relay.

Proud of their successes in the ocean swim events, Bulli Surf Life Saving Club’s Aimee Turner placed 15th out of 41 competitors in the U13 Female 2km Ocean Swim, and Masters competitor Darren Turner won bronze in the 55-59 years Male 2km Ocean Swim.

The 2023 Aussies continues this week with the Masters Championships held on March 27 and 28, before the Opens Championships begins on March 29 and ends on April 2.
