Library treasures images old and new
The Local Studies team at Wollongong City Libraries are appealing for information about old snaps and celebrating new pics added as part of The Illawarra Images Photography Prize
Would you like chips with your photos? Wollongong City Libraries holds photo negatives from the 1960s that have vinegar syndrome. These films give off a vinegar smell due to acidic deterioration. Before they are lost forever, the library has been digitising the affected negatives and putting the originals in freezers to preserve them.

The scanned images have lines across them, but the subject matter is priceless. For many images the library holds information, but in some cases we are asking the public if they know more. The Illawarra Images Photography Prize generated some wonderful new images to add to the collection. Congratulations to the winners who shared the $2000 prize money provided by the Friends of Wollongong City Libraries.
