Q&A with Maxwell The Studio director April Boughton

Stanwell Park graphic designer April Boughton is the director of Maxwell The Studio, a name inspired by her childhood home in the 2508 district.

"My business is named after the street I grew up on in Stanwell Park," April said.

"For most of my childhood and into my early 20s it was the place of all my creativity and big ideas, from primary school show and tell, high school major works and later my university major work.

"It was my way of paying homage to the space that led me here."

Thanks to April for telling us more about her new venture.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is April Boughton, I grew up in beautiful Stanwell Park and have been running my own Design Studio for almost two years. At Maxwell The Studio we specialise in Brand, Print and Digital Design across a range of industries and sectors.

Where did you study?

I studied at the University of Wollongong and obtained a Bachelor of Creative Arts majoring in Graphic Design, and Minoring in Photography.

What inspired you to start your own business?

From a young age, I was captivated by the world of business and the possibilities of the creative industry. At 16, I embarked on a small-scale photography venture, which not only honed my skills but also ignited my interest in business and working with people.

As I progressed through my career, I had the invaluable opportunity to immerse myself in the dynamic environment of studios and agencies. These experiences provided me with the chance to witness firsthand the power of collaboration, innovation, and strategic thinking. However, deep within me, there was a growing desire to forge my own path, to create something unique and my own.

Driven by this ambition, I made the decision to establish my own studio. With unfaltering determination and a solid foundation of industry knowledge, I embarked on this journey. The studio would become my canvas, where I could bring my visions to life and redefine the boundaries of creativity and business.

Best part of your job?

One of the most exciting aspects of my job is the creative challenges it presents. As a designer, I thrive on the opportunity to conceptualise and breathe life into ideas for individuals and companies alike. It's exhilarating to see the spark of inspiration in someone's eyes when they witness their vision materialising before them.

Each day brings new projects, each with its own unique set of requirements and objectives. From designing Brand Strategy that succinctly captures a company's essence, to creating digital visuals for marketing campaigns, I am constantly pushed to my creative limits.

Most challenging?

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is a constant challenge for me due to my love for what I do and this can sometimes overlap between work and play.

Who has helped you along the way?

Throughout my career, I have been incredibly lucky to have had a series of mentors who have played pivotal roles in shaping both my personal and professional development. These mentors, despite not always having backgrounds in the creative or business fields, have offered invaluable guidance and support that has contributed significantly to my growth. I attribute much of my inspiration and drive to the people I am fortunate enough to surround myself with.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with remarkable companies and individuals, which has been incredibly fulfilling. However, one particular moment stands out as a true highlight in my professional journey - making the decision to start Maxwell the Studio.

What is your favourite local way to relax?

A great question. Ever since I was young, my first instinct would be to head straight to Stanwell Park beach for a surf, or otherwise a bushwalk. Being in nature helps me unwind and relax but also refreshes and inspires a lot of my creativity.
