Are you starting your career? Want to reskill and learn something new? Keen to ‘earn while you learn’?
You have from now until Monday 19 September 2022 to apply for one of Wollongong City Council’s cadet, apprentice or trainee positions that are on offer.
Each year, Wollongong City Council provides entry level education and employment opportunities to people of all ages, backgrounds and experience.
This year’s opportunities include:
- Building and Facilities Planning Cadet (targeted - for students who are eligible in 2023 to enter their second year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) – Architectural Engineering at the University of Wollongong)
- Greenkeeping Apprentice
- Human Resources Trainee (identified – for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people)
- Civil Design Trainee (identified – for people with disability)
- Business Administration Trainee
- Procurement Trainee
- Information Technology Trainee.
Wollongong City Council General Manager said that Council was proud of its long-running cadet, trainee, and apprentice program.
“Council’s cadet, trainee and apprentice program is a highly regarded and sought-after opportunity. Not only does it provide access to higher education, whether that be a university degree or TAFE qualification, it also provides meaningful work experience in a professional organisation,” Mr Doyle said.
“Working at Council is unique to many other industries as we have the privilege to work for our community. Everything we do - from building roads, to planting trees, or even keeping our public spaces neat and tidy – adds value to the lives of our community members.
“I’ve asked Council staff over the years to tell me what they like best about working at Wollongong City Council. What they’ve told me time and time again is that they’re proud of what they do and the positive impact their work has on their community.”

About cadet, apprentice and trainee roles
Cadetships
- Full time employment with time off to undertake studies
- Mentoring and support to guide your skills development
- Undergraduate studies
- Industry experience while you complete your study
- Usually between 4 - 7 years duration, depending on the cadetship.
Apprenticeships
- Full time employment with time off to undertake studies
- Mentoring and support to guide your skills development
- Vocational qualifications at levels ranging from Certificate III to Diploma, depending on the apprenticeship
- Industry experience while you complete your study
- Usually 4 years duration.
Traineeships
- Full time employment with time off to undertake studies
- Mentoring and support to guide your skills development
- Vocational qualifications at levels ranging from Certificate III to Diploma, depending on the traineeship
- Industry experience while you complete your study
- Usually between 1 - 4 years duration, depending on the traineeship.
