Second Paws4aCause set to get tails wagging in Wollongong

After the fur-nomenal success of last year’s inaugural doggy day out, Paws4aCause is returning to Wollongong’s JJ Kelly Park this Sunday, April 7.

Hundreds of people and their pets are expected to turn out in their Sunday best to compete in the event’s five categories, try their luck in the dog lotto and browse the stalls.

Talks and demonstrations by Dapto’s Wonder Woof Flyball competitors, Guide Dogs NSW and Wollongong City Council rangers will be back, while the RSPCA and Deaf Dogs Rescue Illawarra Branch join the stallholders.

“It was so popular last year that we sort of thought, let's do it again!” Paws4aCause chairman Di North said.

“We are having more stalls than we had last year. I think the stallholders were just so pleased with the turnout that they've all said they'd come back again… and [there’s] a few new stalls from last year too.

“We'll be running the dog lotto in between [competitions] as well. The kids absolutely loved the dog lotto last year. Figtree Tyres & More donated tyres, we set them in a ring, they were all numbered, we sold the numbers and then we had an elderly male dog that went in the ring and went around and sniffed the tyres, and the first tyre he weed on, that was the winner of dog lotto.

"We had all these young kids that were giggling and carrying on, they were having a ball watching this dog waiting for him to wee on a tyre, so we thought we'd bring that back again this year.”

To end the day, about $4000 worth of prizes donated by local businesses will be raffled off to ticketholders, with tickets available for buy on entry and online.

“We've got 27 prizes valued about $4000,” Di said.

“Most of the sponsors for that have come on board again… but we've got a new sponsor, K9 Coach, and she's giving us $220 worth of dog training from her business. All dogs registered for the competitions will go into the draw to win that.”

All ticket and registration fees at Sunday’s Paws4aCause will again be donated to Interplast Australia, who send teams of volunteer plastic surgeons to provide medical care and training to developing nations.

“We will be supporting Interplast again, which I think it's just such a worthwhile organisation that was started by Rotary 41 years ago,” Di said.

“They're always very grateful and they rely very much on Rotary for funds. [Our Rotary district] put money together over the last few years and we've raised enough money to send a team to the Philippines, which will be going this month… so it's wonderful to be a part of that sort of thing.

“We raised $6000 last year, so we're hoping for even more this year.”

Sunday is currently forecast to be mostly sunny, so Di is hoping to see pups in fancy dress out in droves.

“I've got my fingers crossed with the weather, that if it's a nice day, we'll get a big turnout,” Di said.

“I think that it’s important in this day and age to get communities together and out there enjoying yourself."
