World Bicycle Day: More People Choosing Two Wheels for their Wollongong Commute

Media release from the Illawarra Bicycle Users Group

June 3 marks World Bicycle Day – a celebration of the humble bicycle and its growing role in modern transport. As cities across Australia strive for cleaner, greener, and more connected communities, more people than ever are choosing to ride to work and school.

Wollongong, recently recognised as a UCI Bike City, is seeing a steady rise in the number of cyclists thanks to innovative new and affordable e-bike designs and residents discovering the city’s rapidly expanding and better-connected bike lane network, end-of-trip facilities, and a renewed cultural shift toward active transport.

Cycling offers a wide range of benefits – it’s very cheap, great for your health, reduces traffic congestion, and helps cut carbon emissions. With rising fuel prices, more flexible work schedules, and a growing awareness of environmental issues, bikes are proving to be the smart choice for everyday travel.

“I have been commuting by bicycle in Wollongong since moving to the Illawarra in 2009 and it is significantly busier than it has ever been on the cycle paths, especially the number of kids on e-bikes going to school which is just fantastic,” says Ed Birt, President of the Illawarra Bicycle Users Group. “It’s just such a great start to your day and means you arrive at school or work with your brain in gear.”

New Illawarra Bicycle Users Group committee member, Emma Rooksby, agrees. “I use a bike as my main means of transport, and it is an enjoyable, invigorating way to get around. I love seeing see more people riding on Wollongong’s growing number of shared paths and separated cycle paths, and it shows that Council’s efforts to increase cycling rates are effective."

World Bicycle Day is also a reminder of how inclusive and accessible cycling can be – whether you’re commuting, riding for fitness, or just enjoying the journey. Communities like Wollongong are leading the charge in creating a cycling-friendly future that’s safer and more sustainable for everyone.
