Playgroups across the Illawarra are being encouraged to apply for a one-off grant to enrich their play experiences.
Play Matters Australia is a not-for-profit that facilitates play groups, play experiences, and music therapy to more than 15,000 families every week, in every state and territory across the country.
This year, the charity turns 50, and to celebrate, it’s offering 50 Grants for 50 Years to local playgroups. The grants, each worth $500, can be spent on toys, equipment, art and craft, and more at EducationAll.
We spoke with Play Matters Australia spokesperson Julia Oreopoulos and asked why playgroups are so important for community.
"The first 1000 days of a child's life are a fundamental for growth and development," Julia said.
"Playgroups nurture a child's development through play by extending cognitive, fine motor and social skills – play is really work for children.
"Playgroups are not [only] important for children, but also for parents to connect with local community, establish social connection and build support groups within their networks that will help build their skills and confidence as a parent."
Play Matters Australia focuses on the heart and science of play. The grant is a way for the organisation to give back to communities and is a wonderful opportunity for playgroups in the Illawarra to enhance their play experiences, support child development, and strengthen community connections.
To apply for the grant, playgroups must be affiliated with Play Matters Australia. An application form is on the organisation's website and all applications will be reviewed by a Play Matters Australia panel.
To apply for a grant, head to the Play Matters Australia website. Applications close Monday, 24 April 2023.
