Nature Notes: Blue dragons and birds on the move

Dragons in town

This week started with loads of blue dragons, one of the members of the ‘blue fleet’ and my favourite nudibranch ever, washed up on Little Austi Beach. They feed on blue bottles and are often washed up as part of a flotilla.

I’m a tad obsessed with these small creatures painted in silvers and blues and their floating armadas. You can read more about all of the different members here.

Birds in need of help

If you're out walking near the coast over the next few weeks (until late May), keep your eye out for Wedge-tailed Shearwater fledglings. These marine birds are heading out of the colonies for the first time. They generally leave at night and being young, they're easily disorientated. Add in some Autumn wind and rain and the draw of the bright lights of our coastal towns and cities and they will often be found on beaches and parklands near the water's edge.

Most of the time, they're just exhausted and need assessment and some TLC before being released back on their way. Sometimes they do need an extra helping hand and ongoing care. In any instance, if you find one of these lovely birds contact the Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue on 0431 282 238.
