Sydney Royal Easter Show winners
The locals:
Regular readers and Tarrawanna locals will know that Tarrawanna Public School excels in growing gardens – for human food and for native animal habitat. The dedicated students and their helpers were recently rewarded for their efforts with second place in the Primary School Competition for their garden and its produce. Congratulations to all involved.

The President’s Medal:
A foodie business familiar to regular customers at Flame Tree Co-op (a stockist), Rice Culture, has been awarded the prestigious 16th annual President’s Medal for its organic miso. Based on the Gold Coast, Rice Culture began in 2012 in response to a gap in the market for the Japanese diaspora in south-eastern Queensland.
Chestnuts
In last week’s dive into nuts and those grown in Australia, I neglected to mention chestnuts, which are currently in season. They are grown and harvested in high altitude regions of Victoria and are high in vitamin C, folate, potassium, antioxidants and fibre while being low in fat. According to Australian Chestnuts, they can be roasted, grilled, barbecued or boiled; used in stews, stir-fries, stuffings and soups. Get into them while they last.

Time’s nearly up on the Flame Tree Co-op fundraiser
After launching a fundraiser at a public meeting on March 31, the northern suburbs community has rallied around this non-profit co-operative. With only a week to go, Flame Tree needs your help to reach its $50,000 target. All proceeds will go towards future-proofing Flame Tree. Follow the link to donate.
