Glenbernie recognised in industry awards
Fruit growers Glenbernie Orchard at Darkes Forest have another award to add to their collection. The 2023 APAL (apple and pear industry peak body) Awards for Excellence were held earlier this month. The Glenbernie team won the Agritourism Award, a new category added this year. The award recognises a business that demonstrates excellence in the promotion of their product.
The awards website states, “Glenn and Jo-Anne Fahey have successfully transitioned from being ordinary apple farmers to fruit-picking tour guides, cider makers, guest house proprietors and on-farm event managers.”
Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.

Nina Cantina heads north
Nina Kourea, founder and owner of Nina Cantina, continues to grow and expand her business. As well as running tours of Illawarra suburbs Fairy Meadow, Cringila and Warrawong, and running her own cooking workshops, she partners with other local foodies to present diverse offerings, such as mushroom growing and ramen making. Newcastle will soon be the beneficiaries of this popular business with Nina looking to expand her tours to suburban Islington.
The Edible Garden Trail is coming to the northern Illawarra
The Edible Garden Trail was born in the Blue Mountains in 2018 and is now coming to the Illawarra. It will provide an opportunity for gardeners and prospective gardeners to come together to discuss their edible havens. A small team of volunteers, along with Food Fairness Illawarra are planning the inaugural Illawarra Edible Garden Trail which will be held in November. Expressions of interest were sought for those keen to open their garden. Mark the weekend of 11th and 12th November in your diary. Email gardentrail@foodfairnessillawarra.org.au
