First triathlon dream come true: Cate Giason makes NSW All Schools team

Running star Cate Giason began her third year at Illawarra Academy of Sport by taking on triathlons and has already ticked off her first goal of 2024.

In February, the 16-year-old athlete qualified for the NSW All Schools triathlon team.

“The challenges that a triathlon holds that interest me in taking part involve being able to push myself at three very different disciplines – swimming, biking and running,” Cate said.

“Being able to test my endurance, adapt to different race situations and conditions, and overcoming physical and mental challenges motivates me to take on a triathlon.”

In 2024, Cate will be refining her skills with help from Ashcroft Bell Triathlon Coaching, but she’s also still aiming high in her first love, running.

“Another goal would definitely be to medal at the Australian Track and Field Championships, held in Adelaide in April for the u17s 2000m Steeplechase.”

Cate – whose passion for running was sparked by school events at age eight – has always pushed her limits to become a better athlete.

“Taking that extra competitive step in both running and triathlon has not only allowed me to improve my skills but discover my strengths, overcome challenges and become a better person as well as athlete along the way,” she said.

Cate appreciates the growth she has experienced at the academy. Initially focused on improving her athletic skills, she now values the broader impact on various aspects of her development.

“I decided to apply for the IAS when I was 13 years old, as they are known for providing a clear pathway to higher levels of competition and excellence,” Cate said.

“The academy also offers a wide range of face-to-face workshops and online webinars such as finance, social media, nutrition, sleeping habits and media training, just to name a few.

“These workshops and webinars have not only aided me in becoming a better athlete, but also developing healthy habits in all aspects of life, mentally and physically.”

In 2017 Cate came 3rd at the CIS Cross Country Championships, an early inspiration for her running career.

School athletics events were where Cate first discovered her love of running. Then she joined Kembla Joggers, nurturing her passion via the local running club’s races. By 2021, she qualified for nationals, consistently excelling in cross-country and track.

“I enjoy the rewarding feeling when you finish a race, knowing your hard work and dedication at training has paid off,” Cate said.

Cate remembers her achievements starting in 2017, when she placed third in the u10s girls’ 2km race at the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Cross Country Championship. This was a preview of what it would be like to compete against so many of the best athletes in her age group.

“This small achievement kickstarted my running journey and inspired me to become a serious competitor,” Cate said.

Following this, some of Cate’s impressive achievements have included placing 4th in the u14s girls’ 4km at the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships; 5th at the Australian Track & Field Championships in the u15s 2000m Steeplechase; and 3rd in the u16s 2000m steeplechase at the NSW All Schools Track & Field Championships.

Racing up an age group, Cate placed 3rd in the u16s 2000m Steeplechase at the NSW All Schools Track & Field Championships in 2023 at Sydney Olympic Park.

“I am extremely proud of each of these achievements as it is so rewarding to finally see all the hours I dedicate to my training finally paying off,” Cate said.

Although 2024 is her first season of competing in triathlons, Cate is hoping that with hard work ethic, dedication and positive mindset she can achieve her goals.

Ultimately, Cate envisions competing in the United States as a chance to take her sport and her studies to the next level.

“Pursuing my academic and sports career in America would provide me with amazing training facilities and being able to immerse myself in a competitive sports environment, and the opportunity to embrace new challenges,” she said.
