From family outings to big tournaments: Sage Laird’s golf journey

Sage Laird is aiming for another big year in her young career.

Now in her third year at Illawarra Academy of Sport, the 14-year-old golfer, like so many young athletes, initially gravitated towards team sports but then discovered the appeal of a solo challenge.

“I enjoy team sports as I play Oztag and league tag but I really enjoy golf, as I can go out and play on my own,” Sage said.

“Golf courses are also in great locations and I enjoy playing with my family.”

Her fascination with the sport began with her dad and grandparents, who took her and her cousin to the course.

“Dad could see that I could swing the ball okay and Dad, along with my Pop, started to coach me,” Sage said.

“I would regularly play on the weekends with my family at Kiama Golf Club until I attended the Junior Clinics at Kiama from 11.”

While she enjoyed playing golf with her family, Sage wanted to play competitively. This is when she was introduced to the IAS, giving her a chance to improve her golf game even more.

“I wanted to start playing more competitively with players my own age – no offence, Nans,” Sage said.

“The IAS was the next step moving my golf forward and it has given me opportunities to meet other young golfers and play in tournaments."

Sage appreciates the support at IAS, particularly the strength and conditioning programs as she believes these have enhanced her overall athletic ability. Mentoring from fellow golfers has also been a big help.

“Sienna Clarke, who has been the IAS Golf Captain, has been a really good role model for girls playing golf,” Sage said.

“I look up to her and thank her for supporting me.”

Sage's golf journey is studded with notable achievements. Standouts include being the NSW Junior Champion in 2023, clinching 1st Overall Gross at the Pennant Hills Junior Open, and securing a coveted spot in St Michaels Golf Club's Elite Squad and Wildcats Junior Pennants Team in November 2023.

Despite achieving impressive scores, Sage is striving for bigger things. In 2024, she has set her sights on reaching scratch status. This milestone signifies consistently achieving par or better, reflecting her relentless pursuit of excellence in golf.

“I train every day,” Sage said.

“I attend the elite squad at St Michaels, which has been a fantastic opportunity to train and be coached to improve my game.”

Sage dreams of competing in the most prestigious comps in Australia, including the 2024 Jack Newton International at Cypress Lakes later this year.

“I want to be able to play in some of the bigger tournaments in the state and around Australia."
