Suns Out Skates Out enjoys first social skate from Woonona to Bulli

Russell Vale roller-skating school Suns Out Skates Out hosted its first social skate last Sunday, attracting an enthusiastic group who enjoyed perfect weather and a sense of camaraderie.

“We only had about 10 people but it was a good start for a first social skate,” said Tracey Zarowski, the founder of Suns Out Skates Out.

“We had lots of different skating skill levels out, so it was good to kind of get everyone together.”

Participants gathered at a designated spot in Woonona where basic skating skills were reviewed before embarking on a journey from Woonona to Bulli and back.

“I went over some of the skills that more beginner skaters might need to kind of navigate the outdoor terrain,” Tracey said.

“We had a few breaks along the way and everyone was just enjoying being out with other skaters.”

It was a good way to exercise on a sunny Sunday, but Tracey said the day was primarily about having fun and building a community.

“Whether people are interested in coming to the classes or not, it's just kind of building that skating community a little bit more,” she said.

The social skate was a chance for participants to practise skating outdoors, learn from each other and build their confidence.

“I had a few people come along that were a bit nervous about skating outdoors,” Tracey said.

“If you're especially a newbie or more a beginner, then there's a lot of support there to get over the fear of skating outdoors for the first time.”

Suns Out Skates Out plans to hold a social skate once every three months to give roller-skaters a chance to meet up.

“I think I might do one every three months and maybe try some different locations as well,” Tracey said.

In the meantime, Tracey suggested three spots for skating enthusiasts to enjoy.

  • Go Skating Roller Rink in Oak Flats – “There aren't many roller skating rinks left these days. So that's one that's not too far away that people can go to.”
  • Towradgi Tennis/Basketball Courts – “A good skating spot since it’s got smooth surfaces."
  • In Wollongong near WIN Stadium – “There's a nice beautiful coastal path. It's also quite smooth as well, so that's a good spot.”
