Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club will team up with Stanwell Park Rural Fire Brigade to hold the Stanwell Park Summer Safety Expo on Sunday, November 20.

The surf club will be open from 10am until 1pm to all visitors who want to learn more about summer safety essentials.

“[The RFS] have pamphlets and demonstrations explaining the new fire rating system, [and] they’ve got a couple of new fire trucks,” Helensburgh-Stanwell Park SLSC President Lee Bailey said.

“We’ve got Dr Rip [Rob Brander, a coastal geomorphologist and professor at the University of NSW] coming down to give all the nippers and parents lectures on rips… for about an hour on that Sunday morning.

“We’ll also be going around – those on patrol – talking to people about swimming between the flags, what not to do and what to do, and then Ben & Jerry’s have got a stand down there.”

Lee said Helensburgh-Stanwell Park SLSC was pleased to be collaborating with local RFS volunteers to promote their common cause.

“We are a community asset and we need to be used by the community, and this is one example of how we can help,” Lee said.

“I think we need to make our premises a lot more available to members of the community, and with the RFS – they’re all about summer, we’re all about summer, so it [blends] all right.

“We’ve got a lot of people who are surf lifesavers, who are also in the RFS, so they crossover a bit, too.”

Not only could people expect local surf lifesavers and volunteer firefighters on the day to answer any questions, provide safety demonstrations, and set up the barbecue, but Lee said visitors could expect to “learn a hell of a lot”.

“They can learn how to make their house safe, their property safe, and then when they’re out and down the beach, they can learn how to be safe at the beach too,” he said.

“It’s all about safety.”
