Take 3 - Fairy Meadow eateries in UCI race week

Thursday Flame foodie editor Susan Luscombe suggests three Fairy Meadow eateries to try in the heart of the action, including an authentic Italian cafe, a carpark extravaganza and 'Australia's only evil eye-themed cafe'.

Fairy Meadow is right in the centre of the time trial events for the UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong this week. Here are three local food and drink options to support while soaking up the atmosphere.

1. Pasticceria Massimo Papa

130 Princes Hwy, Fairy Meadow

Opened in 2015, this authentic Italian cafe offers eat-in and takeaway. Husband and wife, Massimo and Alesandra and their team prepare sweet and savoury Italian specialties like baked ricotta cheesecake and pizza by the slice. My favourite is the potato pizza when, at $7 a slice, cooking pizza at home is simply not worth it! Check out the new dog-friendly outdoor eating area.

2. The Fraternity Club

11 Bourke St, Fairy Meadow

The extensive carpark has been turned into a UCI extravaganza. Every day of the race, from 8am to 6pm, celebrate with others at “Italian corner”. There’s a big screen to watch the races live, food vans and an outdoor bar. The weekend of the 23rd and 24th September will also include activities for the kids.

3. Evil Eye Café

3 Vereker St (at the corner of Cabbage Tree Lane), Fairy Meadow

Billed as “Australia’s only evil eye themed cafe”, this Mediterranean-style eatery and shop (there’s also one in Wollongong) is an entry into a different world. The cafe serves food inspired by the cities of the Mediterranean and the adjacent shop sells evil eye jewellery, accessories and homewares.
