I hope you've been enjoying our extended summer.
Over the last very warm, spectacular weekend, Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club hosted their very first IRB Expression Session, with lifesavers from Coogee, Clovelly, Thirroul and Woonona visiting for a weekend of IRB racing, training and outright fun. What is usually Coogee's Scary Garie IRB Racing trip (called off due to the prolonged closure of Garie Beach) looks as though it will now become a combined Sydney and Illawarra annual surf life saving tradition, says Helensburgh-Stanwell Park SLSC president Lee Bailey.
Last weekend also saw the third Indigenous SUP Tour – a collaborative tour between SUP Shellharbour and Dharawal academic Dr Jodi Edwards – since its launch in late February. I spoke with SUP Shellharbour owner Rebecca Dunning about the Dreaming stories and histories of the Dharawal people that Jodi shares during the tour, and how the tour has already created enormous interest since its launch last month.
This week's Beach of the Week is Wollongong's southernmost beach of Windang. Kaye Norris, Windang Surf Life Saving Club's vice president, shares what you need to know before you go.
Catch you later,
Caitlin Sloan
