Hey Tuesday readers,

This week we head to Scarborough Beach in Perth for the 2023 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships where the youth competitors have just wrapped up a weekend of spectacular surf sports. There were major highs for a couple of Illawarra surf clubs, namely Warilla Barrack Point Surf Life Saving Club, whose U13 & U14 Male Board Relay team won gold.

I also take a deep dive (pardon the pun) into winter swimming and all of the Illawarra clubs that offer it. Read on to find out why people get involved in this chilly sport.

On Saturday, March 25, Wollongong Art Gallery hosted the opening of Coomaditchie: The Art of Place, guest curated by Tess Allas with Alinta Maguire's assistance, showcasing works by Aunty Lorraine Brown and Aunty Narelle Thomas. See all the photos from the opening below, courtesy of Matt Houston.

Scholar set to dive into future of ocean protection

A Bulli resident who spends her time snorkelling, reading, travelling, bushwalking and researching ways to help the marine environment, Tahnee is a Bidjigal woman with connections to the South Coast community. Her name even means saltwater, or sound of the sea.   She is one of four recipients of Hi Neighbour’s First Power Scholarship and will start a PhD focused on sustainable aquaculture development, with the scholarship’s support, next year.
