British cyclists emerged victorious in both of the day’s time trials at the UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong.
Zoe Bäckstedt, 17, took victory in the junior women’s time trial and Joshua Tarling won gold in the junior men’s equivalent.
The junior women’s time trial was staged over one lap of a 14.1km course, which started in Market Street and finished in Marine Drive.
Bäckstedt finished in a time of 18:26.78, putting her 1:35 ahead of Justyna Czapla (Germany) in second; and 1:48 ahead of Belgium’s Febe Jooris who placed third.
In the junior men’s time trial, 18-year-old Tarling completed his two laps of the course (total distance of 28.8km) in 34:59.
His time narrowly bested the efforts of Australia’s Hamish McKenzie (19 seconds behind Tarling) and Germany’s Emil Herzog (33 seconds behind Tarling) giving the Brit teen the win.
There is one race scheduled for today (Sept 21): the team time trial mixed relay, in which teams – one men’s and one women’s – race against the clock over the 28.2km course. Cyclists start the race at different times.
It is expected to start from Market Street at 2.20pm and finish at Marine Drive.
