Watch short films by our student journalists in the Know Your Neighbour project
After working with two teenage creators on the Know Your Neighbour project, the Illawarra Flame is happy to confirm: the next generation has got talent!
Last year, The Illawarra Flame put out a call for young people aged 12 to 24 who wanted to create short films about diverse people and places. Now we're happy to confirm: the next generation has got talent!
As part of a new community-building initiative supported by the Local and Independent News Association (LINA) and the NSW Premier’s Department, the Know Your Neighbour project involved journalism training and mentoring two teenage creators over three months, in between their schoolwork and day jobs.
From a strong list of applications, The Flame team chose two young people who went on to blow us away with their curiosity, courage and flair for storytelling.

L to R: Selina and Oskar
Selina Sali is a high school student in the Illawarra who is passionate about pursuing a career in law and journalism.
Oskar Alefaio is a young, queer Pacific Islander born and raised in Wollongong. They are passionate about music, film and art, and hope to share that with as many people as possible.
Today, we're proud to share Oskar's first short film, which features an interview with Society City's manager, Josh Shimmen, and Selina's debut, The Youth: The Future of Wollongong.
For both Selina and Oskar, the Know Your Neighbour project has been their first foray into journalism – but we're confident it won't be their last.
