Two Helensburgh athletes have recently celebrated massive achievements
Helensburgh’s BMX star Saya Sakakibara has been named as one of six riders in the Australian Olympic Team in BMX and Mountain Bike to compete at this year’s Tokyo Olympics.
Saya said achieving her life-long goal feels “so surreal”. “It’s been a dream since I was a little girl to go to the Olympics – to actually reach that goal is amazing.”
Paratriathlete Nathan Johnston, of Helensburgh, has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) “for service to people with disability through sport”, the Governor-General’s department announced in June.
Nathan, who is legally blind, has achieved numerous sporting successes, as well as worked tirelessly on behalf of several charities, including the McGrath Foundation, NSW Police Legacy and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
