Fruit
Apples are in abundance and as always, for local supply, look no further than Glenbernie Orchard at Darkes Forest. They have fuji, gala and the new variety developed in Bilpin – Julie – with grannies and pink ladies on the way. There are pick your own experiences, including a tractor ride these holidays (bookings essential). The team says that these freshly picked apples can be purchased in bulk and refrigerated happily for weeks. If you can’t make it to the orchard, buy online for a 'Farm to Door' delivery or make them part of your regular shop at Flame Tree Co-op.
Pears are in great supply too and plums will continue into May. Although stone fruit did not fare well this season, plums have been consistently good. Grape season hasn’t been great but should last until the end of April.
There are plenty of avocados of all varieties. Lemons and Valencia oranges are in good supply. Citrus will improve over the next month with limes, mandarins and grapefruit coming on. I can’t wait for the onset of the winter navel.
Take advantage of the Australian pomegranates that are available for a short time at this time of year. You can find a recipe for one of my favourite salads containing pomegranates here.
Veggies
The southern region of Queensland is producing lots of vegetables from multiple regions with the prices of pumpkins, celery, broccoli and cauliflower coming down. Kale, lettuce, cabbages, carrots, parsnips, turnips and potatoes are in good supply. Autumn soup, anyone?
Considering the conditions of the past four years, we thank our farmers for continuing to produce incredible quality and variety. We need to support our growers any way we can.
