Tuesdays at Northern Illawarra U3A offer an impressive and entertaining range of Special Interest Groups that provide wonderful opportunities for mental and physical stimulation and for making new social connections.
Here’s how the Tuesday convenors describe their groups:
Philosophy: 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, 9.30-11am
A philosophical look at contemporary social issues of a moral, ethical, religious and scientific nature. Members delight in a respectful and thoughtful exchange of ideas. No previous knowledge is required but an inquiring mind is an advantage.
Brain Games: 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, 9.30-11am
A variety of amusing puzzles, activities and creative challenges to stimulate different parts of the brain. Bring a sense of humour!
Reading Aloud: 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, 11am-12.30pm
Reading aloud to others is a great way of sharing reading from a wide range of genres –humour, poetry, stories, philosophy, magazine articles etc and an opportunity to listen and reflect on other times, other viewpoints. Non-readers are warmly invited as listeners.
Arts Hub: 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, 11am-1pm
The program utilises quality DVDs on subjects of art and artists, music and musicians, architecture and other genres of artistic or cultural interest.
Book Clubs: Tuesdays, 1.30-3pm
First Tuesday: in the Classics Book Club members choose a theme for the year. This year members picked books by European writers such as Oscar Wilde and Franz Kafka. Members find the group immensely stimulating.
Second Tuesday: all or any category of books (mostly novels). Members comment on how interesting it is to read a book that they may not have chosen or even liked. Our meetings lead to good friendships, good entertainment and intellectual stimulation. What fun!
Third Tuesday: contemporary books, fiction and non-fiction. Last year we read biographies, mostly Australian. This year we're reading writers of Asian background. Hugely enjoyable.
U3A Illawarra Choir: Tuesdays, 1pm
At the Wollongong Conservatorium. Musical experience is not necessary, just a love of singing. Members are thrilled by the joy and challenge of singing in the group as well as the wonderful friendships that are formed.
Table Tennis: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10am-12pm
At Bulli-Woonona RSL Club. A great way to have fun and fitness. Attendance limit – 20 persons per session.
Tuesday Lunch Forum, 12.30-1.30pm
These talks are conducted by Zoom from Canberra U3A which is able to access retired politicians, senior public servants, academics and a range of other experts to talk on important issues of the day. This is an exciting new addition for our members.
