If you are happy to buy your nuts in tiny, hermetically sealed plastic bags, go to the supermarket. But if you want to buy nuts, as little or as much as you want, using your own containers, there are really only three places to go around Wollongong (and I know, the supermarkets have bulk bins too, but I say support local business!).

An added bonus is that two have a nut mill, which allows you to buy freshly made nut butter with all the goodness of the nut, but spreadable. You can add nut butter to a morning smoothie for a plant protein boost.

Flame Tree Co-op, Thirroul

Although Flame Tree’s thing is organic, organic nuts are expensive, so you’re more likely to see non-organic Australian nuts here. There are imported nuts also, including pine nuts, which are not yet grown in Australia, and Brazil nuts. Ask one of the friendly volunteers to assist you with the nut mill.

The Source, Wollongong

The Source is a franchise and has the buying power to stock a large range of nuts and nut snack products. Talk to the staff about the use of the nut mill or buy a pre-filled container.

Nut and Deli, Wollongong

This deli/nut bar has been operating since 1978. The offerings include nuts (salted and unsalted, shelled and unshelled), deli items, pulses, grains and spices. Now, with the bonus of a cafe serving coffee, delicious toasties and other delights, you can also consider them to cater for your next event – family or business.
