Entertaining preschool kids is exhausting. I have the kiddies (three of them!) two days a week myself and I call it the "Tap Dance". From when you wake up to the time you put them to bed, you need to put on a performance. Whether it is making snacks, getting them dressed, pushing a swing, setting up painting stations – it is go go go.

Which is why I love the library Preschool Storytime. Our local is Helensburgh and it is every second Friday of the month. And it is free! All you have to do is get them dressed (to my knowledge, nudey rudey is not allowed) and get them to the library. From 10.30am a staff member at the library will read them books, sing songs, dance, read poetry – they even learn sign language. My kids are hooked! And I just sit back and allow a very capable person to do the "tap dance" while I sit and enjoy the smiles.

Each week has a theme which the books and songs are based around – the last week I went, it was transport. The real kicker of these sessions are the bubbles at the end. The kids go nuts for them, like a mini toddler mosh-pit. After all the bubble chaos, you have the option to stick around and do some crafts. The last time we went the kids glued and stuck shapes into a train(ish) shape. Learning – tick. Creativity – tick. Crafts – tick! And you don't have to deal with the mess. A big tick from mum too.

Wollongong Libraries host these sessions all across the Illawarra, along with plenty of other activities for all ages. Be sure to check the event guide to find your local activity.
