With Sydney’s blockbuster VIVID light show spectacular wrapping up last weekend, it’s Wollongong’s time to shine.

Starting tonight, Friday, for the next three nights, Wollongong Mall will come alive with the arrival of VOICES.

Getting the installation together on Friday morning.

The Illawarra Flame caught the crew from Adelaide-based creative studio, Pulsing Heart, putting the finishing touches to the interactive light sculpture this morning.

Standing three metres high, the installation is made up of 50 softly glowing translucent tubes that respond to touch, lighting up and creating sound as they move.

As more people join in, the sounds build into a layered experience, making it just as enjoyable to explore together as it is on your own.

The soundscape, composed by Ekrem Eli Phoenix, and recorded by the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, is a bespoke 45-minute piece that evolves with audience interaction, bringing the sculpture to life.

A social media sensation

Welcoming the new temporary attraction to the CBD, Wollongong Lord Mayor Tania Brown said VOICES offers a simple and inviting way for people to spend time together in the city centre.

“It’s fun and a different experience to enjoy in the CBD. I encourage you to visit Wollongong this weekend, spend some time with the installation with family and friends, and then enjoy the hospitality at one of the many venues nearby,” Cr Brown said.

VOICES is free to visit and operates daily from 10am to 10pm but comes to life after dark.

A small program of after-dark activities will run across Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from 5pm, including a silent disco, roving performers, and vocal and musical performances, with each night offering something a little different.

Voices will operate 10am-10pm across the weekend.
