The Illawarra is gearing up for a night of inspiration, education and community spirit on Wednesday, October 18 as Food Fairness Illawarra presents its annual event, “Connecting over Fair Food.”
The event is set to be held from 5.30-9.30pm at Shellharbour Civic Centre. The theme for this year is “Know, Share, Grow,” reflecting how people can work together to nurture a sustainable and resilient local food system.
The lineup of speakers features stars of the local food movement, including Manu Prigioni, co-founder of the renowned social enterprise Farm It Forward in the Blue Mountains. Manu, recognised for her efforts in connecting unused land with passionate producers of food, brings a wealth of knowledge to the event.
In addition, Foodtalks Illawarra speakers Sarah Anderson of Popes Produce and Suzy Pickles of Saltbush Projects, as well as Narelle Happ from A Garden for Life will share their thoughts on building a sustainable food system.
There'll also be a roving Crop Swap – attendees are invited to bring any extra produce from their gardens, balconies or verges to exchange with others. This not only reduces food waste but also builds community and promotes sustainable eating habits.
The evening will end with a screening of the uplifting documentary Rachel's Farm. This film delves into the journey of actor Rachel Ward, her family and the people who inspired her transition from the entertainment industry to sustainable farming. The documentary looks into the importance of ecological awareness and the restoration of Australia's farmland, food and climate.
Berbel Franse, event organiser and program manager at Healthy Cities Illawarra, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, saying, “Connecting over Fair Food celebrates the great variety of producers and food-based initiatives we have here in the Illawarra. Bringing us together to connect, get inspired, and explore what role we each can play when it comes to our food.”
Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer also shared his excitement about the event, highlighting the council’s commitment to sustainability. “Food waste has the largest impact on overall community emissions, so working collaboratively with other stakeholders to harness fresh ideas and find solutions is very exciting,” he said.
Tickets are available via Eventbrite and include a Darkes Cider and a local dinner box upon arrival.
