CWA marks 80th branch birthday
By Jan Johnston of Stanwell Park CWA
This year’s country of study for the CWA International Day was Fiji. The scene was set with colourfully decorated tables, traditional music and Fijian food including dahl soup, fish curry, kokoda ceviche and banana cake.
A performance delivered by Year 2 children from Stanwell Park Public School involved ancient stories describing the arrival of the first people to the Fijian islands. We were entertained by their wonderful delivery of the script, actions and dance performance.
We also celebrated the 80th birthday of our CWA branch. Originally set up to address the needs of local women in what was then a remote area, Stanwell Park CWA has evolved with the times, drawing attention to current issues such as the scourge of domestic violence and supporting women in need.
A presentation from the local Crime Prevention Squad was both informative and reassuring. We learnt that there are many points of contact that can be used in an emergency and recommendations were given to address threats such as scams and fraud. We were given a booklet “Safety Information Guide for Older Adults”.
One interesting piece of information was that in addition to the 000 phone number for emergencies, there is another number, the Police Assistance Line, 13 14 44, for minor crimes that do not require immediate police presence.
On Sunday, September 27, we hosted a Devonshire tea and Bric a Brac stall at the hall.
Find us at the CWA hall at 15 The Drive, Stanwell Park at 10am on the first Tuesday of the month. Everyone is most welcome.
