This January, not-for-profit outdoor experience provider Land’s Edge Foundation is launching a new adventure programme in three exciting NSW locations: Chowder Bay in Sydney, Black Water Reserve in Kiama, and Seven-Mile Beach in Gerroa.
In each location, they’ll be offering Coastal Explorer sessions: opportunities to discover the native wildlife and surrounding countryside through activities like kayaking, snorkelling and mountain biking. These activities are suitable for all ages and abilities – designed to help locals and holidaymakers enjoy new ways of exploring their own backyard.
Read on to find out more about each location...

Discover a natural bushland bursting with hundreds of species of native flora and fauna, just 5kms from Sydney’s CBD. This is Chowder Bay, a historical maritime village lined with dusty gold sand and calm, turquoise waters. Look across the bay and you’ll see the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, but at Chowder Bay – surrounded by tropical foliage and the gentle laughter of kookaburras – you’ll feel a million miles away.
Coastal Explorer sessions here include paddleboarding, kayaking and snorkelling – where you can come face-to-face with seals, seahorses and beautiful views in all directions.

Kiama was once the site of two strong volcanic flows called the Gerringong Volcanics, which came out of Saddleback Mountain (now a collapsed volcanic vent). This volcanic history is what gives Black Beach Reserve its name (and colour) – a shimmering black-grey shore lined with Norfolk pines and quaint cabins. The waters of Kiama Harbour are filled with a diverse marine life, including weedy sea dragons, blue gropers, cuttlefish and stingrays weighing up to 150kg and aged up to 40 years old. You may even be lucky and see a grey nurse shark.
With Coastal Explorer, you can explore this traditional working harbour above and below the surface through sessions in paddleboarding, snorkelling and kayaking.
SEVEN MILE BEACH NATIONAL PARK, GERROA

One of the most iconic spots on the NSW coastline, Seven Mile Beach National Park is a strip of lush coastal forest beside silk-soft sand. It’s home to a remarkable array of native flora and fauna, including kookaburras, white-breasted sea eagles, pythons and crimson rosellas. In front, the seven miles of golden sand is lapped by family-friendly waves that make it one of the best spots in NSW to learn to surf.
This is where Land’s Edge Surf School was established over 20 year ago – one of the most reputable surf schools on the Eastern Seaboard of Australia. Learn to surf here this summer with Coastal Explorer, or head off with the team on an adrenaline-fueled mountain biking trip through the National Park.
