Discover the art of porcelain at Courthouse exhibition
The theme for the Illawarra & Sydney Southern District Porcelain Artists' 43rd annual exhibition on November 22 and 23 is "High Tea"
By Carolynne Macdonald, a member of Illawarra & Sydney Southern District Porcelain Artists
The Illawarra Porcelain Art Society was established in 1976, has a long and proud history of nurturing the art of porcelain painting. In 2024, the Sydney Southern District association merged with the Illawarra association to form Illawarra & Sydney Southern District Porcelain Artists as we know it today – a thriving community of artists dedicated to preserving and evolving this intricate craft.
Our practice focuses on painting white porcelain pieces of various shapes and sizes, which are then fired in a kiln to create both functional and decorative works of art. Subjects range from delicate miniatures and animal motifs to oriental influences and contemporary designs.
Many of our artists also experiment with mixed media, combining porcelain with silk and other materials to create truly one-of-a-kind pieces.
Over the decades, the Illawarra & Sydney Southern District Society has built a vibrant network of creatives who regularly come together to share ideas, refine techniques and inspire one another. Themed collections and collaborative projects have become a signature of the group, blending tradition with modern expression.
In August, for example, we hosted a workshop on using an art-sized airbrush to create striking backgrounds and intricate subject work.
Our teachers are members of the Australian Porcelain Art Teachers Association with many having published books, taught across Australia and been featured as guest artists on the international stage.
This November, we are proud to present our 43rd annual exhibition: a celebration of creativity, craftsmanship, and community. This year’s theme is "High Tea", which conjures up images of warm summer afternoons, the joy of shared moments and the elegance of leisurely gatherings.
Whether formal and refined or relaxed and casual, High Tea serves as the perfect inspiration for our artists to showcase their unique styles.
Expect to see more than just teacups and saucers our exhibition will feature everything from coffee sets to serving plates, with each piece designed to elevate your next High Tea experience. While the High Tea theme takes centre stage, the exhibition also showcases a diverse range of artworks exploring other captivating subjects. It’s a true feast for the eyes, with a striking display of creations that highlight both artistic flair and technical excellence
All artwork will be available for purchase, with prices ranging from under $20 to over $200, offering something for every taste and budget. Even if you're not looking to buy, we warmly invite everyone to come along, enjoy the beauty of porcelain art, and meet some of the talented artists behind the work.
Come and be inspired – we can’t wait to welcome you!
