15 September 2022

Hello,

September is Australian Organic Awareness Month, held by the industry every year to raise awareness of organic products and farming systems.

While my focus this week is on organic food – the whys and hows, the benefits and costs – organics extend beyond food to textiles, skincare and household products.

My dive into plant-based organic food this week is not deep, merely skimming the surface. It is a complex and nuanced area, particularly here in Australia where we have the dubious distinction of being the last developed country to still have domestic organic certification legislation.

This week I introduce you to the team at Calderwood Organics, the third profile in my Spring series of local growers. The team are in the early stages of building organic commercial production in a fertile oasis amid the southern suburbs of the Illawarra.

I also profile three local organic retailers – grocery stores in the northern and southern Illawarra, and a cafe in the heart of Wollongong.

Enjoy!
