Extraction 3 set to wrap shoot at Coalcliff cokeworks
Coalcliff's old cokeworks has been turned into a film set for Chris Hemsworth’s latest movie, Extraction 3
Chris Hemsworth’s latest big-budget movie, Extraction 3, has returned to Wollongong to shoot more action scenes, this time at the Coalcliff cokeworks.
The production’s initial visit to the Illawarra wrapped after three weeks of filming here in August.
Hemsworth, British actor Idris Elba and the Extraction 3 production crew spent almost a month filming the third instalment of the Aussie actor’s hugely successful Netflix action franchise, with helicopter chases and gunfights among the scenes shot in Port Kembla and beyond.
Now the massive Netflix production has returned and made Coalcliff its primary location for filming. According to a notice delivered to residents, this was to include “vehicle stunt sequences, simulated gunfire, theatrical pyrotechnics, and smoke and rain effects”.
Screen Illawarra chair Nick Bolton says the Coalcliff cokeworks shoot was a “huge, huge undertaking”.
“They're there for three or four weeks. They've erected a massive stage that you can see from the train, and the lights are all up as well.
“So it looks really impressive.”
Nick was unable to confirm if any of the movie’s big name actors have been on the Coalcliff set.
“I presume they are. I don't know, I haven't heard yes or no, but I presume they're there, being the stars.”
The cokeworks site is only open to film crew but The Illawarra Flame did speak to a senior member of the security team, who wished to remain anonymous.
He said the Extraction 3 shoot had been going on for seven weeks at various locations around NSW and was scheduled to run for another four weeks.
The old cokeworks shoot has been incident free, he told The Illawarra Flame, except for some attempts by teenagers to gain unauthorised access to the set.
He said each day’s shoot started around 7am or 8am and finished about 4pm or 5pm.
Coalcliff residents were notified of the September 7-19 shoot prior to filming, but crew will remain on location until mid-October to take down sets and clean up the site.
