Illuminating our First Nations culture

Wollongong's iconic Flagstaff Hill lighthouse will light up for Spin Fest, as we welcome the world to Wollongong for the UCI Road World Championships.

The Beyond the Breaking Waves project provides a glimpse into the unique stories, traditions and culture of locally based First Nations artists from the Illawarra and South Coast regions. A series of creative works will be brought to life in a new and exciting digital form, and projected onto the lighthouse each evening between 6:30pm-10:30pm.

The history, culture and kinship of Australia’s First Nations people have been shaped by a connection to Country dating back more than 60,000 years. This projection of artworks, drawn from Wollongong Art Gallery’s permanent art collection, communicates a strong sense of belonging and connection to our beautiful coastline and its waterways.

Participating Artists: Alice McKenzie, Phyllis Stewart, Val West, Steven Russell, Lorraine Brown, Narelle Thomas, Jodie Stewart, Julie Freeman, Cheryl Davison.

Beyond the Breaking Waves is curated by the Wollongong Art Gallery and produced by Electric Canvas.

Australia's leading projection mapping specialists, Electric Canvas, will transform the Lighthouse. The team have two decades of experience, and are known for vibrant projects projected onto the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Vivid Sydney projects and more.
