Growing fun at Green Connect’s Thursday Farm Playgroup

As big kids head back to school this week, little ones can look forward to picking up their playgroup routine. This Thursday, those who like their nurture in nature can visit the Farm Playgroup, which launched at Green Connect’s urban farm in Warrawong in term 1 this year.

Every Thursday during school terms, the Green Connect Farm Playgroup focuses on early learning about the environment and sustainability. It gives children and families a chance to connect with nature and experience farm life.

Quill Darby, Green Connect's activities coordinator, hosts the Farm Playgroup, which was born out of the desire to do more with the farm's resources.

The initial setting was the farm's old duck enclosure, which was transformed into a welcoming space for families. Turf was laid, creating a safe and comfortable environment for children. The emphasis is on unhurried and unstructured play, allowing children to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.

Each two-hour session typically includes one farm-related activity, such as collecting eggs or citrus picking, depending on the season and the needs of the farm on that day.

On the day that I took my children (aged 2 and 3), we pruned and fed a banana tree, watered a bean garden and picked sweet potato leaves to feed the piglets.

Unlike a drop-off program, this playgroup actively involves parents or guardians, encouraging shared experiences and fostering a sense of community.
